Both brothers, Justin and BJ, born and raised in Norfolk, Virginia came from modest backgrounds as their father Melvin is a scout for the Kansas City Royals while their mother Yvonne serves as a teacher. The environment they were raised in provided the strong background of their work ethics and similarly, both started a successful career within Major League Baseball (MLB).

Born on August 21, 1984, B.J. Upton, also known as Melvin Emanuel Upton Jr., began his journey in baseball at an early age.
